A few words about polyethylene

A few words about polyethylene

Table of contents

In the last few decades there has been very visible progress in the use of polyethylene.  This is happening, among other things, due to its properties.

UHMWPE ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Fiber from this material is used, among other things, in the manufacture of bulletproof vests.

HDPE high-density polyethylene. It is harder compared to PE-LD, has higher mechanical strength, higher melting point (125 °C), higher barrier to gases and higher chemical resistance, shows greater brittleness at lower temperatures, and is less transparent (milky white).

MDPE medium density polyethylene.

LDPE low-density polyethylene. It is transparent, flexible and soft, retains elasticity at low temperatures (even down to -60 °C), odorless, completely physiologically inert, permeable to gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) and aromatic substances (odors), while not very permeable to water vapor, susceptible to welding, not very resistant to higher temperatures.

LLDPE low-pressure linear low-density PE.

PEX cross-linked PE chains, used for pipes and insulation.

So high-density polyethylene is the hardest and therefore, more prone to cracking, low-density polyethylene is soft and used in the manufacture of the tank, can allow the walls to deform.

Due to its unique properties, MDPE polyethylene can be used in many areas. Compared to HDPE, it is more resistant to cracking.

MDPE is used in agriculture, construction, medicine, packaging. It is used to produce heavy-duty production bags; bakery bags, potting soil packaging, tape, sunscreens, sealants, automotive and photographic products; gaskets, gas and drain pipes; insulation materials, wire coating, chemical tanks and containers; beverage bottles, and many other...
